'When we's' aka 'the good old days'.

'When We's'...also known as 'the good old days'.

I fear I am beginning to sound like a 'when we'. What on earth is a 'when we' you are probably wondering. If you're not South African it will no doubt sound like Dutch to you.

In 1980 Rhodesia gained independence from Britain and became Zimbabwe. Policy changes invariably follow with regime changes as was obviously the case at the time. Some folks deemed the changes good while others did not. Many of the 'nots' headed for South Africa. These 'nots' eventually earned the label 'when we's' because everything seemed perfect, or better, back in the old days 'when we' were in Rhodesia.

I am becoming a bit of a 'when we', though not of a place, but of an era which now, on looking back, seems was so much simpler, happier, and more peaceful. When  respect, values, good manners, dignity, chivalry, and merit were still considered the order of the day. I am pleased to mention that on researching the views of my generation, many folks of that era are of the same mind. When they felt who they were was so much more important that what they did or what they had, and their contribution mattered. So this is not just the ramblings of my mind.

Progress is inevitable, but some of todays happenings are certainly  questionable...more likely 'regression' of our humanity.

Do we have the freedom to voice an opinion, speak our truth, or disagree with the status quo? It appears, not. Though, that is worth standing up for - our humanity is at stake. The dictionary states:

1. all human beings collectively; the human race; human nature.

2. the quality of being humane; kindness; benevolence.

I want to add free thinking, speaking, self-determined, considerate, caring, conscious beings.

Sometimes we get wake-up calls when we are challenged to speak the unspeakable which is the norm in a free society, but these days, is that safe?

Our future depends on us. How we evolve depends on us. What we leave for our children and grandchildren depends on us.

Our children and grandchildren depend on us for a healthy world of peace, joy and prosperity.

We owe it to them to leave behind a better world.
